This article deals with the impact of students’ independent work on the development of the professional competences of the specialist. The reasons are described why the independent work of students has a great importance for their learning activity. It is concluded that independent work organized on the principles of pedagogics gives a significant positive effect on the formation of professional competences of future specialists. The example of the organization of independent work in teaching business English is given in the article.
