          <artTitle lang="ENG">Teaching foreign languages in a multi-level classroom</artTitle>
        </artTitles>
        <abstracts>
The paper summarises national and international experience in teaching foreign languages to a multi-level group of students. It reveals the causes and substantiates the inevitability of the emergence of heterogeneous groups. However, it is demonstrated that many problems caused by this heterogeneity are successfully solved with various techniques worked out by practicing teachers. Special attention in the paper is paid to the possibility and ways of solving these problems with university students studying languages in a multi-level group, though the methods that the authors have come across while doing their research were mostly designed in a secondary school setting. The paper considers different ways of evaluating students’ skills and needs, followed by planning a strategy of using a core textbook for the whole class or managing without it. Next, a general lesson plan is outlined, which caters for individual needs of every student and unites them in a single body with common goals and objectives. As the main technique of teaching a multi-level class is splitting students into groups during the lesson, great attention is devoted to various types of grouping and their efficient use in the process of studying, as well as ways of matching students for this purpose. Classroom arrangement is also recommended for different types of exercises and tasks at different stages of the lesson, as it can greatly affect communication. Proceeding to the problem of differentiating the tasks in all aspects of language teaching (reading, writing, listening and speaking) many examples of tasks for beginners, intermediate students and advanced learners working on the same topic or language material are given in detail. To reduce teacher’s work it is shown how some of their functions and responsibilities can be delegated to students. At the same time every effort is made to create a respectful and student-friendly environment, where all the learners feel that they are learning something new, their confidence is getting stronger and nobody suffers from being at a different level. The paper also focuses on the possibility of applying the principle of differentiating to the evaluation of students’ achievements throughout the year and at the end of the course. An idea is expressed that grading should take into account the students’ effort and personal growth rather than ability. At the same time it should objectively reflect the level of competence correlating with international systems of grading.

        </artTitles>
        <abstracts>
Higher technological and vocational education plays an important role in the long-term progress and industrial development of Russia. Currently, there is a growing demand for Russian technical graduates, as the thoroughness of Russian education makes Russia attractive for foreign students who come to study at Russian universities from different countries. In recent years, much has been said about one of the key problems of vocational education, namely, about the adaptation of foreign students in the Russian education system. Paying particular attention to this problem, the authors identify a number of activities that contribute to the successful adaptation of foreign students, namely, developing an understanding of the importance of adaptation, developing independence, awakening interest in the host country, its cultural characteristics and the subject area of educational work of foreign students. As part of this study, we were able to get an idea of the problems of academic achievement of foreign students, as well as of the educational experience of foreign students in the Russian-speaking environment of a Russian university. The results showed that foreign students really realize their specific experience, highly appreciate it, despite the existing difficulties associated with the learning process in the Russian-speaking environment and taking into account the fact that foreign students are now high-tech students, which additionally stimulates them to conditions of adaptation in their new socio-cultural environment. The article highlights the problematic issues that foreign students face when adapting to their new environment, having a significant impact on their level of satisfaction with their studies. The material presented in this article is aimed at a better understanding of the causes or factors affecting the dropout of foreign students.

          <artTitle lang="ENG">Developing Learning and Cognitive Competence through Studying Terminological Vocabulary in Literary Texts</artTitle>
        </artTitles>
        <abstracts>
The article concentrates on the study of developing learning and cognitive competence in students of language specialties in the process of analyzing terminological vocabulary in literary texts. The process of integrating fiction into language teaching, which is currently given scant attention, is considered as an opportunity to create a learning environment characterized by an active and central position of students in class, which allows to overcome professional isolation and cultural limitations of students, and contributes to the formation of international level specialists. The article explores the multidimensionality of the term as a linguistic phenomenon. An attempt is made to study the information aspect of the term, its use as an artistic device. The examples of work with the excerpts from fiction texts show the possibility to develop learning and cognitive skills and abilities in the process of terminology analysis. The article also discusses the main specialized programs functioning within the framework of computer terminology – KARTOTEKA, Compleat Lexical Tutor, COCA. Using these programs contributes to forming of some competencies, learning and cognitive in particular. Data from the website Compleat Lexical Tutor demonstrate the use frequency of terms in fiction confirming the terminological potential of such texts. The relevance of the study consists in the need for further research of the literary text potential and its role in teaching foreign language terms and forming learning and cognitive competence in students of linguistic specialties. Cognitive activity on terminology analysis allows students to see the underlying content of a literary work, as well as to understand and decode the author's intention. In the course of work, the following methods were used: the method of summarizing and analyzing theoretical literature on the subject; semantic analysis method for determining the values of the factual material; contextual; interpretative analysis method.

The methodology elements of this transfer, which might be instrumental in raising the overall learning efficiency and students’ engagement, have been proposed as a driving force to acquiring continuity in teaching writing. The collected data includes studies discussing secondary and higher school education levels within the framework of teaching writing. The analysis of the chosen literature has shown necessity in applying integrative approach in writing instruction by incorporating speaking and visual representation (drawing, graphics). An empirical follow-up research in higher school settings has been suggested as a test to the formulated hypothesis.
