Abstract:

The article provides a scientific basis for the concept of contextual guessing and presents exercises aimed at developing contextual guessing skills in students of a non-linguistic university. The tasks for professionally oriented reading, containing pre-text exercises, a text on the specialty, text and post-text exercises are systematized. It is shown that when teaching reading special texts in order to develop linguistic guessing, exercises on international vocabulary, key and polysemantic words, word-formation elements, synonyms, antonyms, definitions, etc. should be used. The main and control-analytical stages of teaching contextual guessing are considered. The importance of language experience, background cultural and regional knowledge of students is noted. It is shown that the ability to use contextual guessing contributes to the development of reading skills, forms a positive attitude to the learning process, and develops students' independence.
