COMPETENCE-BASED APPROACH IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING OF LAW STUDENTS

Abstract. The article discusses foreign language training of law students drawing on the competence-based approach. It is noted that this approach as a set of pedagogical methods and tools of foreign language teaching ensures the formation and development of law students’ foreign language communication skills when organizing subject-oriented activities, allowing them to master the theoretical and practical skills of the specialty in the educational process. The necessity of competence-activity foreign language teaching of future lawyers through the practice of using interactive case-study method is substantiated. According to the authors, the integration of the case-study method into the content of foreign language training stimulates students’ motivated cognitive activity in solving practical professional tasks of the legal nature, the acquisition of research, analytical and evaluation competences, the students’ awareness of the essence of their future professional activity and activation of foreign language speech communication.The experience of foreign language training of Law Institute students at Tomsk State University in the course of “Foreign Language” on the basis of professional case assignments is summarized. The algorithm of conducting a practical lesson on case analysis is presented, with the goals, formed competences and forms of work being outlined. The authors conclude that practice-oriented foreign language teaching using the case-study method provides the formation of important professional foreign language competences enabling law graduates to successfully carry out intercultural professional interaction.
