Abstract. The relevance of the article is due to the need to study the potential of media texts in the process of teaching a foreign language because of the infrequent access of teachers to the newspaper discourse resources. Print media plays an important role in the learning process and is recognized as a useful tool for learning English. In particular, newspapers provide a wide range of different types of texts, and language styles can be easily used not only in relation to linguistic aspects of language, but also in relation to extra linguistic elements such as critical thinking or understanding the universal picture of the world. The article highlights the issue of using newspaper material, in particular, news articles in foreign language practical classes in order to improve the non-linguistic students’ foreign language communicative competence. A newspaper media text has the ability not only to develop lexical and grammatical skills, but also to form linguistic and cultural competence and implement interdisciplinary links as well. The authors conclude that, when referring to media material, teachers should exercise maximum caution and give preference to the relevance and usefulness of the chosen news, as well as take into account the students’ interests. Drawing on the results of newspaper media texts integration into the educational process during one academic year, the authors conducted a mini-survey in three study groups among the second-year students of the Police Training Faculty. The respondents' replies emphasize the necessity of integrating authentic resources into the learning process of a professionally oriented foreign language in order to increase their language proficiency and cultural awareness.
