Abstract:

The study focuses on the discipline «Foreign Language» as implemented in higher education programs for marine engineering training. The aim of the research is to analyze the content and structure of this discipline in the context of developing students' readiness for business communication and intercultural interaction. The relevance of the study is determined by the discrepancy between regulatory requirements, educational expectations, and the actual formation level of universal competences UC-4 and UC-5. The research method involved a survey of 131 learners aimed at identifying their perception of the course objectives, motivation level, and self-assessment of readiness for professional interaction in a foreign language. The results show that fewer than 20% of respondents feel sufficiently prepared for this type of interaction, despite acknowledging the importance of the discipline. Drawing on the collected data the necessity for structural and content-based transformation of the course is substantiated, including content and language integrated learning (CLIL), professionally oriented tasks, and the simulation of intercultural communication situations.
