Integrating corpus-based approaches into training translators in the sphere of professional communication

The fact that translators do not use corpora on a regular basis in their professional activities despite the growing popularity of corpus linguistics inspired the authors to focus their research on practicability, potential and prospects of using corpora in the teaching of specialised translation, namely translation in financial sphere. The literature review shows that using corpora in the teaching of specialised translation helps students to develop translating skills and experience in referring to corpora and making them indispensable resources in translation practice. This paper considers key terms of corpus linguistics and evaluates the relevance of some linguistic corpora for the purpose of translators’ training and translation practice. As there is no universal corpus containing specialized terminology for different professional domains, the task of finding a relevant corpus becomes an important issue. The NOW corpus and context dictionaries Linguee and Reverso Context are shown to be relevant for Translation of Business Documentation course. The exercises for training translator students at different stages of translation process (pre-translation and text analysis, translation, and editing) were carefully studied and supplemented with recommendations on using corpora where appropriate. Training exercises based on corpus data have been developed and some of them are described in the paper as examples. They should be tested in the nearest future and the approach should be extended to other professional domains of the English language.
